Cockroaches in Los Angeles: Two Different Problems
Effective cockroach prevention requires understanding which species you are dealing with, because German cockroaches and American cockroaches (the two dominant species in LA) live completely different lifestyles and need different prevention strategies.
German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are the smaller species (1/2 inch) with two dark stripes behind the head. They live entirely indoors, in warm and humid microclimates near food sources — behind refrigerators, under dishwashers, inside cabinet hinges, and in restaurant kitchen equipment. They do not travel far and rely on humans to spread them (via used appliances, cardboard boxes from infested locations, or from neighboring units in multi-family housing).
American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are large (1.5–2 inches), reddish-brown, and primarily live in sewer systems, storm drains, and municipal infrastructure. They enter homes from outdoors — through floor drains, toilet connections, utility penetrations, and gaps under exterior doors. Unlike German cockroaches, American cockroaches can survive outdoors and their indoor presence is typically more about opportunistic entry than established indoor infestation.
A kitchen infested with German cockroaches and a bathroom with one large American cockroach require completely different responses.
Prevention: German Cockroaches
German cockroaches cannot establish without consistent access to food and moisture. These prevention measures eliminate both:
Sanitation:
- Clean behind and under appliances regularly — the area behind the refrigerator, under the stove, and around the dishwasher are prime German cockroach territory
- Wipe stovetop and range hood after every use; grease buildup is a major food source
- Clean inside cabinet hinges — this is where German cockroach populations concentrate in kitchens
- Empty and clean trash cans daily in commercial kitchens; every 2–3 days in residential kitchens
- Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight
- Store all food in sealed containers — including pet food
Moisture control:
- Fix all dripping faucets, leaking pipes under sinks, and dishwasher connections
- Check for moisture under the refrigerator (the drain pan should be clean and dry)
- Ensure the dishwasher door seal is intact and not leaving moisture in the gap
- In humid garages or utility rooms, use a dehumidifier
Entry prevention:
- Inspect used appliances (particularly microwaves, toasters, and coffee makers) before bringing them home — German cockroaches live in the warm motor areas of appliances
- Check cardboard boxes from storage units or moving company supplies before bringing them inside
- In apartment buildings, seal gaps around pipes under sinks and around baseboards that lead to adjacent units
Prevention: American Cockroaches
American cockroach prevention focuses on blocking their entry routes from the sewer system and outdoor areas.
Drain management:
- Keep all floor drains capped or fitted with a drain cover when not in use
- Run water down infrequently used drains regularly — dry drain traps allow sewer gases (and cockroaches) to enter
- Install drain covers with mesh fine enough to prevent cockroach entry
Exterior exclusion:
- Seal gaps under exterior doors with door sweeps
- Check utility penetrations through exterior walls — fill gaps around pipes with caulk or expandable foam
- Ensure the exterior perimeter slab or foundation has no cracks at ground level
- Keep firewood stored away from the house; American cockroaches shelter in wood piles
Perimeter treatment:
- Regular exterior perimeter treatment with residual insecticide creates a barrier that reduces American cockroach entry
- Pay particular attention to the area around foundation vents, utility penetrations, and drain entry points
When DIY Prevention Is Not Enough
These situations indicate that professional treatment is required in addition to prevention measures:
German cockroaches:
- Seeing cockroaches during the daytime (daytime sightings indicate a population large enough that they are being displaced from hiding areas by overcrowding)
- Finding egg cases (oothecae) — small brown capsules about 1/4 inch long — in kitchen drawers or cabinets
- Seeing cockroaches in multiple rooms rather than just one area
- Any cockroach sighting in a restaurant, food preparation area, or commercial kitchen
American cockroaches:
- Seeing more than 1–2 individuals per month, which suggests a large population in the drain system
- Finding cockroaches in multiple areas of the home rather than near a single drain
- Presence of egg cases or small (light-colored) juvenile cockroaches, indicating breeding inside the structure
Professional treatment for German cockroaches uses targeted gel bait and insect growth regulator — see our cockroach control service page for details.
Cockroach Prevention for LA Apartments and Multi-Family Buildings
Cockroach prevention in LA apartments requires coordination at the building level, not just the unit level. German cockroaches spread through shared walls via plumbing and electrical voids. Landlords and property managers in LA County are required by housing code to maintain units free of pest infestation.
If you rent and have a cockroach infestation, notify your landlord in writing. In multi-family buildings, effective German cockroach control requires treating all affected units and the shared areas simultaneously — treating one unit while adjacent units remain infested simply causes cockroaches to redistribute temporarily, then re-infest the treated unit.
